Kindergarten-2nd grade
K-2 Students are working with ukuleles and keyboards to increase music literacy and skills in a hands-on way. These are the skills each class is building right now:
Kindergarten: Strumming single chords within a song. This reinforces the idea of waiting until it is time for their part. Strumming patterns go from very simple to more difficult, and some songs incorporate more than one strum pattern. Songs we are using to build these skills: Call Me Maybe, I've Got a Feeling, We Will Rock You, Land of 1000 Dances
First Grade: Beginner chord changes in a two-chord or three-chord song. Students are learning to change chords while continuing to play or strum. Songs we will be using for this skill: Three Little Birds, Call Me Maybe
Second Grade: Major and minor tonalities, and multi-chord songs. Students are learning to hear and feel the difference between major and minor chords on the ukulele, guitar and keyboard. We started exploring minor chords with I've Got a Feeling. This week we are focused on D major which incorporates and accidental, and D minor which is all white keys on the keyboard. Students will play One Dance using Dmi and Call Me Maybe, which uses Dmaj.
